The first thing to do when you start planning your pond is to decide what size you need. The size you’ll need depends on what you would like to get out of your pond. Ask yourself these questions, and you’ll be on the way to planning the perfect setting.

Fish and Plant Ponds
If you want to admire the flow of fish in your water, you will want to create a larger space for koi fish or goldfish to live. A fish pond will also need aquatic life because the fish will eat the plants.
A pond for koi fish and plants will need to be deeper, ideally between 3 and 5 feet, and the bigger, the better. The other option is a more miniature water garden for goldfish, which would only need to be 2 feet deep.
Pond-less Waterfalls
If you want to simply enjoy the active flow of water, then a smaller pond will do well. A disappearing waterfall or fountain would create that atmosphere you are looking for.
The continuous flow of water is pumped from a shallow reservoir, and it only needs to be 1 or 2 feet deep. Sometimes called a pond-less waterfall, it is desirable for people with small children or who only want a water display.
